Latest PBRI Pedestrian and Bicycle Reports Now Available
July 23, 2012
The Pedestrian Bicycle Resource Initiative at UNO Transportation Institute's latest reports, New Orleans Pedestrian and Bicycle Count Report, 2012; and New Orleans Regional Pedestrian and Bicycle Crash Report, 2009-2010 are now available. These reports represent the most current data on the state of walking and bicycling in the New Orleans region.
The Count Report provides robust preliminary data indicating that recent efforts to improve active transportation infrastructure are being rewarded with substantial annual increases in users—both bicyclists and pedestrians—citywide, and particularly in areas with dedicated, high-quality infrastructure for biking and walking. These increases are particularly pronounced in areas that have been directly impacted by new facilities.Through bicycle and pedestrian count data collected at 16 locations around the city over three years, this report demonstrates that bicycling and walking are on the rise. Trends indicating increased bicycle and pedestrian activity identified in 2011 have continued or accelerated in 2012. Overall, estimated daily traffic (EDT) of bicycles at all observed locations has increased by 54% since 2010, and pedestrian activity has increased by 38%.
Meanwhile, as the New Orleans region has recovered from Hurricane Katrina and its population has rebounded, so too has its high rate of bicycle and pedestrian crashes. While total crash numbers in recent years are well below pre-2005 levels and certain encouraging trends have emerged, the spatial and demographic patterns of crash occurrence have remained largely similar to those identified Pre-Katrina. The Crash Report evaluates these patterns and identifies significant crash 'hot spots' in need of more in-depth evaluation in order to improve safety conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians.
PBRI is a joint project of the Merritt C. Becker, Jr. University of New Orleans Transportation Institute and the Regional Planning Commission that acts as a statewide bicycle and pedestrian resource for advocates, planners, engineers, and political figures.
